McLaren 750S
Built to be felt
In today’s supercar world, the 750S is a rare breed – created for drivers who refuse to compromise.
It's engineered for incredible performance, of course. But as a McLaren, it’s also crafted to deliver ultimate engagement. Nowhere is this approach more apparent than in the way the supercar’s V8 engine sounds, feels and responds.
And it’s all thanks to the unrivalled mechanical intensity of pure combustion.
Among the many ways the 750S communicates with its driver, the exhaust speaks the loudest. Every element has been meticulously fine-tuned like a musical instrument. From valve positions to gas flow paths, and even the structural materials themselves – it all works together to bring out the car’s unique ‘voice’.
Across the rev range, the M840T’s unique acoustic character has been sculpted by balancing the engine’s cocktail of frequencies (or ‘orders’, as the engineers refer to them).
“We don’t chase decibels, we focus on the quality of the engine sound,” explains Chief Engineer Sandy Holford. “It should grow in step with your throttle input, cognitively connecting you to the engine, and the car.”
To create the powerful emotional crescendo of the 750S V8 engine, McLaren engineers specifically tuned the exhaust to bring out the eighth-order harmonics for a clear, high-rev tone, while reducing muddier second and sixth-order frequencies. The result is a voice that’s unmistakably McLaren. Unmistakenly raw, technical, and full of soul.
And that voice isn’t only heard outside the car. Thanks to the Intake Sound Generator (ISG) – a mechanical system using a diaphragm-based sonic pipe – the driver hears genuine engine noise inside, channelled directly into the cabin.
“It's mechanical, it's honest, there's no trickery, no simulation,” adds Powertrain Engineer Gareth Brown, “just the roar of genuine combustion.”
PERFORMANCE THAT TOUCHES YOU
But the sensory engagement of the 750S doesn’t stop at its incredible soundtrack. It’s designed to deliver physical feedback too. So the engine mounts were engineered using different materials and compound stiffnesses to carefully and selectively control when – and how – the pulse of the M840T reaches the driver.
On start-up, a deliberate amount of mechanical feedback passes through, creating a physical connection with the engine that thrills as you begin your drive. But for steady cruising, that sensation is dampened. Then, at high revs, the feedback returns to enhance focus and immersion.
“The art lies in delivering the engagement precisely when it’s most rewarding,” explains Product Manager Max Hunt. “So when you squeeze the accelerator and climb up the rev range, you want all that sensation – that clear and direct connection to what is happening right behind you.”
Even the gearshift modes enrich the melody. In Sport, ignition-cut upshifts deliver aggressive crackles and bangs like a percussion section, whereas in Track, the cylinder-cut ensures every drop of fuel is fully dedicated to performance.
When you drive the 750S, every note from the V8 engine sound isn’t just noise – it’s the voice of combustion at its purest. This isn’t an engine that just performs. It speaks. It grips. It leaves a mark. Not just on the road, but on you.
There’s simply nothing else like it.
