NFT FAQs

The Basics

What is an NFT?

An NFT (Non-Fungible Token) is a one-of-a-kind unit of data that can be sold or traded to represent ownership of unique items. NFTs can be attached to any digital file, including photos, videos, audio, or even virtual real estate. These assets are the building blocks of a connected virtual world called the ‘metaverse’, and are bought and sold with cryptocurrency on an infrastructure known as the blockchain.

All NFTs are stored on the blockchain, which records ownership of digital assets through records that are near-impossible to hack. Every time an NFT is traded or sold, that transaction is stored for all to see - adding another ‘block’ of data to the ‘chain’. NFTs are bought and sold with cryptocurrency, such as Ethereum.

What is a crypto wallet and how do I set one up?

There are two ways of buying a  McLaren Automotive NFT: via card payment, or by using cryptocurrency with a MetaMask wallet. If you choose to purchase the NFT with a card payment, you will still need to create a MetaMask wallet to generate (or ‘mint’) your NFT once your purchase has been completed.

A crypto wallet is similar to your physical wallet, containing money (in the form of cryptocurrency) and a form of ID. Your crypto wallet does the same thing as a physical wallet, but on the blockchain.

Your wallet will have  its own ‘ID’ and contains both your cryptocurrency balance and any NFTs you have bought with those cryptocurrencies. There are a number of crypto wallet providers, including MetaMask, which is widely-used, secure, and user-friendly.

When you create a crypto wallet, you’ll get what is called a ‘seed phrase’. This  phrase is made up of a series of words which will let you recover your cryptocurrency or NFTs if you lose access. It is important that you never give this phrase to anyone.

Anyone who knows your ‘seed phrase’ can gain full access to your wallet and could buy, sell or transfer any funds or assets so it’s important to keep this safe. It’s important to remember that McLaren Automotive will never ask for your seed phrase.

How can I buy a McLaren Automotive NFT?

Our first NFT Collection will be available via an invite-only model. Phase 1mint on 11 May is open to McLaren Friends and Family – specially invited individuals as well as those who own a physical McLaren Automotive car and are signed up to the McLaren Automotive mailing list. Phase 2 access will open to specially invited individuals 48 hours later. McLaren Automotive NFTs follow the ERC-721 standard and will be minted on the Ethereum blockchain.  At the time of minting, the user will be able to select what wallet address the NFTs will be minted to.

Once those who have been invited are registered for the allowlist, you’ll be sent a unique code along with instructions on how to access the marketplace. This is where you can buy McLaren Automotive NFTs once the Collection goes live.

It’s also where you can stay up-to-date on the latest news from MSO LAB and see the development of our Roadmap.  Please note, the marketplace may be affected by maintenance as well as cooldown periods during times of high traffic (such as the launch of the Collection).

For those who do not receive an invite to the Genesis Collection mint, there will be future public McLaren Automotive drops that you can be a part of.

What is MSO LAB?

The first chapter in McLaren Automotive’s metaverse roadmap is MSO LAB: the creative umbrella for all of our first-phase NFT releases and an ongoing series of drops and collections.

McLaren Automotive Special Operations, McLaren Automotive’s bespoke division, has always sat at the bleeding-edge, combining performance, innovation and craftsmanship to deliver ‘the art of the possible’. MSO LAB continues this mission in the digital realm, providing the foundations of McLaren Automotive’s entry into the Web3 era.

MSO LAB will allow us to embrace new digital dynamics, exploring the future of performance in automotive and beyond through collaborations with brands, creatives, artists, technologists and innovators.

Holders of Genesis Collection NFTs will unlock Category One membership to MSO LAB, unlocking behind-the-scenes access, members-only airdrops, design sketches, exclusive rewards, early access to future NFT drops and more.

What is the difference between McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive NFTs?

McLaren Automotive is home to McLaren’s luxury, high-performance  supercars and hyperrcars. McLaren Racing includes McLaren’s Formula 1, IndyCar, Extreme E and esports teams. McLaren Racing NFT collections, therefore, cover racing inspired NFTs and the McLaren Automotive NFT collections will deliver collections inspired by their luxury high-performance track and road cars. If you want to be in the know, however, on both McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive NFT drops, you can join both channels on Discord.

What is Cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrencies are a digital/virtual currency that is secured by cryptography, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or double-spend. Many cryptocurrencies are decentralized networks based on Blockchain technology - a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers.

Many cryptocurrencies are decentralized networks based on Blockchain technology - a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers. Benefits of cryptocurrency include cheaper & faster money transfers and decentralized systems that do not collapse at a single point of failure.

What is the Metaverse?

We are in the early stages of the metaverse - a continuously evolving, unique digital space. The metaverse is the future of the internet where various technologies, such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), converge to create a virtual world.

Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One is an example of the metaverse – a shared and interconnected virtual world in which people can play, work and create through digital avatars. Within this universe, users can accumulate virtual items, accessories and property, which can be bought and traded using cryptocurrency on an infrastructure known as the blockchain.

Among many use cases, the metaverse encompasses real-world experiences and products, such as those from McLaren Automotive, in  their digital form.  Concepts such as the digital economy and interoperability  are enabling  users to participate in the next generation of digital investments and social interactions, and as these technologies evolve, the utility of your McLaren Automotive NFTs will evolve with them.

What is a marketplace?

The marketplace is where you can buy McLaren Automotive NFTs.

Please note, the marketplace may be affected by maintenance as well as cooldown periods during times of high traffic.

How can I get on the allowlist?

What is minting?

Minting an NFT refers to converting digital files into digital assets by recording them on the blockchain and creating value and ownership of the digital asset.

The digital items or files will be stored in a decentralized database or distributed ledger and cannot be edited, modified, or deleted. Similar to fiat currency creation, when a manufacturer mints a physical coin, the process of uploading a specific item to the blockchain is known as minting.

In short, the NFT minting itself is a fancy term for “store on blockchain”.  McLaren Automotive NFTs will be minted on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain, where most NFTs are commonly minted.

What are gas or NFT minting fees?

Gas fees, or minting fees, are a transaction fee on the Ethereum blockchain. When making transactions, such as purchasing an NFT, you will need enough ETH in your wallet for the initial purchase and the associated gas fees.  The gas fee enables your transaction to be processed on the Ethereum network & stored on the blockchain.

What happens to gas fees?

Gas fees contribute to processing Ethereum transactions and keeping the network online. McLaren Automotive does not set gas fees or receive proceeds from gas.

Account & Setup

Where can I add my wallet?

The only wallet that you will need for this platform is a MetaMask wallet. A MetaMask wallet will enable you to have an Ethereum address to which your NFT can be sent. As a result, you can connect your MetaMask wallet with external platforms such as OpenSea.io and conduct secondary sales of your NFT. Please visit this step-by-step guide to set up your MetaMask wallet.

Note: It is best to select a wallet supported by OpenSea.io to ensure seamless secondary sales.
