McLaren 600LT Spider

600LT Spider

Tale of the longtail

An LT is the most extreme expression of a McLaren you can get. Pushed to the edge, pushed as far as it will go in terms of performance and exhilaration. It is the purest distillation of the sheer driving pleasure embodied by all our cars.

Each ‘Longtail’ is rare, and raw. Characterised by its optimised aerodynamics, reduced weight, track-focused dynamics, increased power and enhanced driver engagement, a McLaren ‘Longtail’ is built to be driven. With pioneering design and ground-breaking engineering, boundaries are broken in the pursuit of the extreme, to deliver the ultimate thrill.

The McLaren F1 was a road car never designed to go racing – yet when it did, it dominated. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, the McLaren F1 GTR finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th – and we became the only manufacturer to win the world-famous endurance race at the first attempt. This was not the end of the McLaren F1 GTR though, as it then evolved into one of the purest race cars in modern motorsport history: the ‘Longtail’.

This dramatic new iteration made its debut in 1997, and the distinctive stretched silhouette – which reduced drag and increased downforce – earned it its iconic name. Optimised through extensive weight-saving measures, the McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ was also more than 100kg lighter than the already flyweight McLaren F1 GTR. Beloved by its drivers, it took victory in five of the 11 rounds of that year’s FIA GT Championship, and finished first and second in the GT1 class at Le Mans. The nearest opposition was almost 30 laps behind.

We revived the legendary ‘Longtail’ name at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, with the launch of the then most performance-focused model in the Super Series, the 675LT True to the spirit of its ‘Longtail’ predecessor and the traits inherent to a car wearing the LT badge, the 675LT was at the time of launch acknowledged as the purest, most involving series-production McLaren supercar to date.

Responding to customer demand after the production run of Coupés rapidly sold out, we created the 675LT Spider. The most focused, fastest and exhilarating open-top model to ever wear a McLaren badge, all 500 examples were sold within two weeks.

Welcome a new member to the McLaren ‘Longtail’ family. One that shares the same spirit as its predecessors. That pushes McLaren engineering to its most extreme. And strips away every obstacle to performance.

The 600LT  is only the fourth McLaren to ever receive the LT – or ‘Longtail’ – badge. Inspired by the renowned 675LT and its iconic ‘Longtail’ racing predecessor, it is the next chapter in the McLaren LT story.

It is the most extreme incarnation of the McLaren Sports Series ever. Built to excel on roads and race circuits. As you might expect, it retains the agility and purity of a Sports Series, but has been imbued with all the raw thrills and exhilarating performance of a true McLaren ‘Longtail’. The result is intoxicating.

Crafted in carbon fibre, the elongated bodywork of the 600LT is not only stiffer and lighter, but optimises aerodynamic performance to generate an additional downforce. Extreme weight saving measures – in addition to the unique-in-class carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis – contribute to a dramatic 96kg weight reduction.

The forged aluminium double wishbone suspension and lightweight braking system from the 720S raise track performance to even greater heights. A 600PS and 620Nm twin-turbo V8 powertrain ensures the 600LT is the most powerful Sports Series ever.
