Our first-ever Hyper-GT’s aerodynamic teardrop design allows a top speed of 250mph
These are the world’s first official pictures of our newest Ultimate Series model – the extraordinary McLaren Speedtail. The three-seat Hyper-GT delivers an unmatched road-driving experience, blending stunning beauty and advanced aerodynamics with a new level of technical luxury and simply breathtaking performance.
The Speedtail is the most aero-drag-efficient road car ever produced by McLaren. This has been achieved by the exceptional design of the dramatically elongated body and the teardrop-shaped cabin, and the painstaking aerodynamic development. Add in ground-breaking innovations such as the front-wheel static aero-covers, the retractable rear-view cameras in lieu of wing mirrors, and the active rear ailerons, and the result is a car capable of reaching an astonishing 403km/h (250mph) – a top speed higher than any other McLaren to date.
Powering the Speedtail is a pioneering petrol-electric hybrid powertrain producing a combined 1,050PS – sufficient to accelerate the Speedtail from 0 to 300km/h (0 to 186mph) in 12.8 seconds. Transferring that staggering performance to the road are bespoke P-ZERO™ tyres developed with McLaren technology partner Pirelli.
The canopy has been designed to give the driver the best possible visibility and is made from electrochromic glass, which allows the top of the windscreen to be darkened at the touch of a button. Inside is a three-seat layout with a central driving position inspired by the McLaren F1. The dihedral doors are power-operated and feature single-piece ‘wrapover’ lightweight glazing.
Inside, the main controls, including those to start the car, are on a roof-mounted panel. This design philosophy ensures a clean and uncluttered dashboard. Instead, high-definition displays and touchscreens sweep across the cockpit, giving the driver instant access to the controls and enhancing the driving experience.
The finest aniline and semi-aniline hides cover almost every surface, providing a 30-per-cent weight reduction compared to traditional leather, thanks to the air infused beneath their surface during the manufacturing process.
It’s one of the many bespoke features that help the Speedtail set a new standard in bespoke personalisation. Other options include Thin-Ply Technology carbon fibre (TPT) – a material comprising ultra-thin carbon layers each positioned at a 45° angle and milled to produce a construction that resembles flowing water. This can be integrated into areas such as the overhead control panel, gearshift paddles and steering-wheel clasp, and is a further example of our continual pushing of the boundaries of innovation.
Due to the extensive customisation options, it’s likely that no two of the 106 examples being made – the same production run as the McLaren F1 – will be identical. Our in-house bespoke personalisation service, McLaren Special Operations (MSO), will ensure every Speedtail – all of which have now been reserved – is made to its owner’s precise specification.
‘McLaren has never before built a vehicle like the Speedtail. As our first “Hyper-GT”, it is the ultimate McLaren road car: a fusion of art and science that combines an astonishing maximum speed with an iconic central-driving position and a truly pioneering approach to bespoke personalisation,’ said Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive. ‘A ground-breaking hybrid powertrain sits within a lightweight carbon-fibre body reminiscent of the sleek “streamliners” that once set world speed records, while the luxurious three-seat cockpit offers a sublime combination of an incredible driving experience, unmatched individualism and innovative materials unseen so far in a road-going vehicle.’
