McLaren and Belstaff: the perfect match

The new Belstaff x McLaren Collection is born out of a shared passion for design and innovation

Two iconic brands famed for their heritage and innovation join forces today to launch a new luxury clothing collection. The Belstaff X McLaren Collection marks our first-ever collaboration with the company, and a new direction for McLaren Automotive. Belstaff, like McLaren, is a pioneering British brand with a long history of innovation. Founded in 1924, it was the first to use wax cotton to create waterproof clothing for motorcycling.

Rob Melville, McLaren Automotive Design Director, describes the new collaboration as a ‘meeting of minds’: ‘I think there’s a very similar DNA in the companies,’ he explains. ‘The way Belstaff has been born out of functional outerwear, the way they cut the materials, the way they use the materials – it’s all there for a reason, and that’s an approach that’s very close to our hearts. “Everything for a reason” is one of our key design pillars at McLaren – it’s about taking what you need and making it beautiful.’

The respective creative teams combined their design philosophies and expertise to create a new ‘capsule’ clothing collection. Based around the principle of having a few timeless classics in your wardrobe, the collection consists of 12-pieces for both male and female. Their classic designs and subtle colour palette make them perfect for both work and leisure.

Carefully designed with the both brands’ customers in mind, each piece has ergonomic seam lines and innovative stretch fabrics, to allow a full range of movement at the wheel and beyond, while padded shoulders provide seatbelt comfort and a minimal neckline aids peripheral vision.

‘Applying McLaren principles to different products and watching them come to life has been enthralling,’ Melville explains. Helen Wright, Chief Executive Officer of Belstaff, agrees: ‘The Belstaff X McLaren Collection merges the best qualities of both brands. We share an obsession with design, performance and innovation.’

The collection is now available in Europe and the USA from Belstaff stores, official Belstaff online sites and selected McLaren retailers, and it will launch in Asia in early 2019.
