過酷を極めたチャレンジ

最高出力1275PSのMcLaren W1は、マクラーレン史上最速のラップタイムと最速の加速を誇るロードリーガルカー。ですが、並外れたパフォーマンスだけではだめだ、地球上で最も厳しい自然環境に耐えてこそ真のスーパーカーだ、というのがマクラーレンのエンジニアの信条。そこで選ばれた場所は北極。McLaren W1のプロトタイプで実施した徹底的なテストは、新たな「1」カーの真価を問う試金石となりました。

北極でも走れるパフォーマンスを目指して

最優先課題は、北極の厳しい自然環境の中でもMcLaren W1らしいパワフルな走りができるよう、シャシーと各種システムを最適化することでした。「なんといっても1275PSのマシンですから、低グリップのコンディションでトラクションを確保するのは至難の業です」と話すのはマクラーレンのリードテストドライバー、ダニ・マルコス。「トルクベクタリングシステム、トラクションコントロール、スタビリティコントロール（ESP）、ABSといった各種システムから最高のパフォーマンスを引き出そうと皆で奮闘しました」

氷点下でのストレステスト

McLaren W1のエンジン、ギアボックス、ハイブリッドバッテリー、電気モーターに対し、氷点下でストレステストを実施しました。冷却ベントに付着した雪や氷のかたまりが及ぼす影響についても厳密にチェックしました。チーフエンジニアのアンディ・ビールは、「日照時間が短く、テスト時間が長い」ことがウィンターテストの難しさであるとしつつ、「そういった条件下で性能を発揮できるよう調整を施すことにウィンターテストの意義がある」と言います。
