Monterey Car Week in California is an annual pilgrimage for any car enthusiast in the US. Each year, McLaren owners get together to start the week with a special drive. We follow in hot pursuit.

McLaren owners began Monterey Car Week in style with the 2016 McLaren Rally, taking the scenic route from Los Angeles to Carmel Valley in a head-turning 16-car convoy. The exclusive group rendezvoused at the Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey, on Tuesday. After enjoying breakfast the next morning, the 2016 McLaren Rally headed out of LA, snaking over the iconic Mulholland Highway, with its breathtaking scenery and challenging twists and turns.

The 2016 McLaren Rally started from the exclusive waterfront at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles.

After leaving Los Angeles, the McLaren Rally climbed into the hills, following the iconic Mulholland Highway.

Camarillo Airport hosted the first stop. A technical autocross course was specially marked out on the airport asphalt, and guests were given ample opportunity to explore the capabilities of their supercars, which included examples of the McLaren 570S, 12C, 650S, 675LT and McLaren P1™.

The autocross was great fun,’ said McLaren 675LT owner Eric Hautemont. ‘There was a big-run up to the first braking zone, a left-right flick, then a long, tricky left that flowed into the remaining corners. Finding the perfect line was a real challenge.’

A relaxing lunch in the Southern California Wing Hanger surrounded by historic combat aircraft allowed the drivers to swap high-octane tales, before the group moved on to an overnight stop at the luxurious Belmond El Encanto, Santa Barbara. After heading north through Los Olivos, Santa Maria and Pismo Beach on Wednesday morning, the 2016 McLaren Rally arrived at the Justin Winery in time for a specially prepared three-course lunch.

The convoy arrived at Camarillo Airport, where the Commemorative Air Force display historic aircraft. Guests pushed their McLarens to the limit on an autocross course.

The convoy took to the legendary Pacific Coast Highway for the final leg of the journey, skirting the ocean from Cambria to Carmel and travelling through the rugged beauty of the Big Sur region en route. After 409 miles exploring some of the world’s best driving roads, the 2016 McLaren Rally arrived at the award-winning Bernardus Lodge & Spa in Carmel Valley on Thursday evening.

But with ‘The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering’, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca, and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance yet to come, there was still plenty more of Monterey Car Week for the McLaren guests to enjoy.

At the end of day one, the 2016 McLaren Rally arrived at the luxurious Belmond El Encanto resort in Santa Barbara.

Everything from a McLaren 570S to a McLaren P1™ joined the trip, and all were just as at home cruising Highway 101 as scorching around the autocross course.

McLaren guests enjoyed a three-course meal at the Justin Winery, Paso Robles, and some greats roads nearby.

The final leg of the journey took the 2016 McLaren Rally north on Pacific Coast Highway 1, ending with a warm welcome at the exclusive Bernardus Lodge & Spa.
