DESIGN DIRECTOR FRANK STEPHENSON DISCUSSES HIS INSPIRATIONS AND THE DEVELOPING DESIGN LANGUAGE OF McLAREN ROAD CARS.
Nature is the world’s most effective designer. Millions of years of evolution have created some of the most sophisticated and efficient design solutions. McLaren designers have a natural curiosity and an obsession with efficient design, which is why our inspiration often comes from the natural world and the animal kingdom. We also take design cues from art, sculpture, aeronautics and everyday life.
We are surrounded by nature’s genius. Biomimicry lets us learn from nature, then use it to solve complicated engineering problems. By asking what would nature do, we find ingenious ways to make our cars more aerodynamic, boost downforce, increase performance and improve handling.
Animals that are built for speed are always lean, light and agile. Evolved for a single purpose, their skin appears shrink-wrapped over their bone and muscle. The cheetah is a perfect example of this optimised design. It looks fast even when it’s standing still. Taking the same approach to the bodywork over our car’s mechanical skeleton reduces volume and strips excess material. It also reduces the surface area and lets us remove weight from the car. The result is a supercar that’s lean, light, beautiful – and stunningly quick.
Just like our Formula 1 racers, every kilogram on the McLaren 650S Spider has to justify its existence. It’s what makes our cars so exciting to drive. The McLaren 650S's paintwork is no exception: our 3-stage, Formula 1-inspired paint technology ensures the colour, tint, lustre and finish is flawless, while keeping weight to an absolute minimum. Whether it’s a personal favourite, or you want to evoke racing cars from McLaren’s illustrious past, you’ll find the perfect colour for your McLaren 650S Spider. The AkzoNobel paints are mixed by hand, applied by hand and finished by hand to exacting standards.
Want something extra exclusive? Many of our Special and Elite paint finishes contain a higher level of metallic and pearlescent content. Using exclusive pigments and a greater holographic effect, these highly crafted finishes complement the car’s stunning design by accentuating every line, curve and contour of the body.
Not only do the McLaren 650S Spider’s lightweight forged alloy wheels look stunning, they’re also extra strong and shed weight from the most beneficial place. That means they amplify the breathtaking dynamics, improve the ride comfort and exaggerate the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8’s mind-blowing performance.
They’re supplied with all new high-grip Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa System tyres for even faster cornering, improved traction and better braking.

Inspired by the McLaren P1™ and echoing the McLaren speed marque, the McLaren 650S features striking all-LED headlights with all functions – dipped- and full-beam, indicators, day-time running lamps – illuminated by LED technology. LED headlights are as bright as Xenon, but last the life of the vehicle and draw less current, saving fuel and CO2.
Embedded in a thin LED strip, the lights are spectacular when lit – stealthy when not. Specifically designed spherical bulbs in the Airbrake strip ensure the brake lights are highly visible – even when the Airbrake is deployed.
