Our no compromise philosophy and courageous approach to innovation influenced the design and build of our state-of-the-art facilities. The result is a spectacular architectural statement, visually impactful and meticulously designed to inspire and motivate McLaren Group employees.

STATE-OF-THE-ART

Designed by Foster + Partners, our buildings demonstrate both technical and environmental leadership, and exceeds standards in both. Inside the MTC there is a state-of-the-art wind tunnel, Formula 1™ preparation race bays, world-leading racing simulators and office space for more the 1,500 employees.Many of the MTC’s most stunning architectural features perform a number of functions. The serene lake, dissipates heat generated by the wind tunnel and ensures a constant internal temperature of 21°C. The waterfall aerates the water as it leaves the heat exchange system, preventing algae build-up. And behind the scenes there’s a little bit of rocket science: the buffer vessels that cool the water for the wind tunnel’s heat-exchange system are modelled on Saturn-V rocket boosters.

BORN IN THE WIND

Improving the balance between a car’s drag and downforce by 10% can improve lap times by up to a second. Four metres wide and 145-metres long, our advanced wind tunnel was central to the MTC’s design, and was the first element of the building to be installed. Housed in an acoustically isolated block on the lower level, it allows us to relentlessly test aerodynamic models at 60% scale.

ENGINEERING LED ARCHITECTURE

Conventional architecture was unable to find an elegant solution capable of supporting the MTC’s magnificent glass façade. Using traditional steel mullions to support the weight of the glazing would have ruined the building’s visual appeal. Inspired by the rear wing support struts on our Le Mans-winning F1 GTR, our engineers designed and precision cut 12m-high perforated wind blades and slim stainless steel tie rods to transfer the load to the building’s substructure.

McLAREN RACING

The McLaren Technology Centre is also home to our Formula 1™ racing team.

Designed, built and tested at the MTC, our Formula 1™ cars are constantly evolving: improving downforce, losing weight, gaining speed. The rate of development at the MTC is so intense, that our engineers introduce a new part to the Formula 1™ cars every 17 minutes.
