SPEED SKATING

We join a host of McLaren customers in Switzerland as they enjoy a morning of drifting and sliding in a fleet of McLarens, organised by McLaren Geneva and the Gstaad Automobile Club.

Who says you need all-wheel drive in the snow? If your car is well-balanced, powerful, responsive and wearing Pirelli winter tyres, you’d be amazed how much grip you can find. A group of McLaren customers found this out, when McLaren Geneva recently organised a day of ice driving, in collaboration with the Gstaad Automobile Club in Switzerland.

The customers were invited to either bring their own cars, or to enjoy a fleet of (strictly rear-wheel-drive) McLaren 650S Coupés and Spiders arranged by the retailer. With a course laid out on the runway of a local airfield, the drivers got to drift between cones along a long, looping circuit, and practise their car control in a slippery but safe environment. Many commented on how much grip the car offered, and how controllable it felt in the transitions between powerslides.

The Gstaad Automobile Club was formed 10 years ago to organise driving and social events for enthusiasts in the area. The club’s co-founder and President, Hansueli Brand, welcomed the McLaren customers to the event, before sending them out onto the packed-snow surface. There was no racing allowed, and not too much competition against the clock – but then, who needs a stopwatch when the driving is this much fun?
