DESERT RUN

You just need to look up at the unbelievable Burj Khalifa skyscraper, towering 830 metres above downtown Dubai, to understand that bigger, better and bolder isn’t just a motto in the Middle East, but rather a way of life.

For McLaren owner Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa this philosophy also applies to his weekend drives. Instead of simply taking his 12C Spider around the block for a spin, the Bahraini recently spearheaded a non-competitive rally across the desert, organised by the Supercars Club Arabia.

More than 50 supercars, including many rare McLarens, assembled in Dubai before setting off on a two-day adventure, exploring some of the more engaging roads on the Arabian Peninsula.

This inaugural edition of the event - dubbed ‘Desert Run’ - took participants over the border into Oman and along the coast of the Arabian Gulf to the port of Sohar, the birthplace of the mythical sailor Sinbad.  The drive then crossed back into the United Arab Emirates and snaked up the winding mountain road to Jebel Hafeet, a popular destination for petrol heads.

We catch up with Sheikh Salman during the event, to learn more about the supercar club and of course his beloved limited edition McLaren.
