McLaren Applied Technologies adds more power to the FIA Formula E Championship.

McLaren Applied Technologies, part of the McLaren Technology Group, has been supplying powerful electric motors to the FIA’s innovative Formula E Championship since its inception in 2012 – and it has now signed a new two-year deal to be its exclusive supplier of next-generation batteries from 2018 to 2020.

Next-generation batteries will be developed that will allow drivers to complete a full race distance without swapping cars mid-way through a race. The existing batteries, provided by another supplier, only allow drivers to complete around half the race distance before they have to stop and switch to a second car for the run to the chequered flag. This will change from the 2018/19 season onwards.

Rodi Basso, Motorsport Director at McLaren Applied Technologies, said: ‘We’re delighted McLaren has been chosen by the FIA to be the sole supplier of batteries to Formula E from 2018 to 2020. As well as providing a global showcase for our sustainable technologies, this win provides another example of McLaren Applied Technologies’ vision to work closely with series partners to do our bit to help make the fan experience quicker and slicker.’

Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, described the 100 percent increase in range as ‘a phenomenal achievement’, adding: ‘I am absolutely delighted that a company with such a reputation for engineering excellence and expertise like McLaren Applied Technologies will be producing the new battery.

The 2016 - 2017 season of the FIA Formula E Championship is due to begin in Hong Kong on 9 October 2016.
