ALL IN A DAY'S WORK

In Tokyo we meet Go Hiramatsu, a lawyer who uses his McLaren P1™ for the daily commute – and also takes it to Japan’s mountain passes at the weekend.

The McLaren P1™ was created to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track. With 916PS (903bhp) generated by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine coupled to an electric motor, an electronically limited top speed of 350kph (217mph), an active ride height, and active aerodynamics able to produce 600kg of downforce, it more than delivers.

But there is another side to the McLaren P1™, indeed another side to all McLarens. They can be used every day, in all situations, and the innovative suspension system on the McLaren P1™ really does allow it to make a Jekyll and Hyde transformation. In Race mode, the RaceActive Chassis Control (RCC) can lower the car 50mm and stiffen the spring rates by 300 per cent, but in any of the E-mode, Normal or Sport settings, McLaren’s hybrid hypercar displays an entirely different breadth of abilities.

That’s why Go Hiramatsu, a 43-year-old lawyer living in Tokyo, Japan, uses his McLaren P1™ for the daily commute to and from his office. He even uses the E-mode when arriving home, so as not to interrupt his neighbours. ‘My neighbourhood is entirely residential and I would rather not create a disturbance, so that’s why I push the E-mode button,’ reveals Go. ‘The noise goes and I glide quietly into the garage.

Of course, that’s not to say that Go doesn’t drive his McLaren P1™ outside of Tokyo too. As well as meeting up with fellow enthusiasts each weekend, he and his friends head to the Hakone Turnpike or to racetracks like the Fuji Speedway.
